Synopsis:
Angelo Lobo’s great-grandfather, Zeferino Xavier Lobo, was a surgeon born in Goa, Portuguese India, who sailed to Cabo Verde to serve the people of the islands — and never left. His grandfather, born in Cabo Verde in 1916, eventually made his way to Massachusetts. Angelo arrived in America at one year old, brought by his uncle and aunt. His conscious memory begins at five.
He grew up in Brockton, Massachusetts — the city of Marvelous Marvin Hagler, of hard winters and harder lessons — navigating a childhood defined by hustle, hardship, and love that often showed up sideways.
Planted in Concrete is his memoir. It is the story of what it costs to carry a lineage across oceans. Of a young man finding his footing in a world that never quite held still. Of addiction, survival, recovery, and the slow, unglamorous, necessary work of becoming the father, the man, and the storyteller you were always meant to be.
It is raw. It is honest. It starts with a man who sailed so the rest of them could live. And it ends with the rest of them — finally — living.
